Solitary Bee Superpowers: Meet the Quiet Heroes Who Don't Live in Hives

When we think of a bee, most of us picture a massive hive, a queen, and thousands of workers. But did you know that nearly 90% of the world's 20,000 bee species are solitary — living alone, building their own nests, raising their own young?

These quiet heroes are all around us, and they're extraordinary.

Who Are Solitary Bees?

Unlike honeybees and bumblebees, solitary bees have no colony, no queen, and no hive to defend. Every female is a queen in her own right — capable of building a nest, collecting pollen, laying eggs, and sealing the whole operation up by herself.

Common species include:

  • Mason bees (Osmia species) — nest in hollow stems and pre-existing holes, using mud as mortar
  • Leafcutter bees (Megachile species) — cut precise circles from leaves to line their nest cells
  • Mining bees (Andrena species) — excavate tunnels in bare soil, creating tiny underground apartments
  • Wool carder bees (Anthidium species) — scrape plant fibres to build felt-like nest linings

Why They're Safe Around Children

Here's something that surprises most parents: solitary bees very rarely sting. With no honey or communal colony to defend, they have almost no reason to. A mason bee will crawl across your hand without reacting. A leafcutter bee, disturbed mid-cut, will simply fly away.

This makes them wonderful insects to introduce to children. Watching a mason bee pack pollen into a hollow reed, or a leafcutter bee carrying a green circle twice her body width, is one of nature's best shows — and it's free, safe, and happening in most gardens.

One Bee Does the Work of a Hundred

Solitary bees are extraordinarily efficient pollinators. A single red mason bee is estimated to do the pollination work of approximately 100 honeybees. This is because:

  1. 1They carry pollen dry, on specialised hairs on their abdomen — meaning it falls off easily onto flowers as they move
  2. 2They visit a much wider range of flowers than honeybees, which tend to specialise
  3. 3They're active earlier in the season, in cooler temperatures that ground honeybees

Fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, and wildflower meadows all depend disproportionately on solitary bees.

How to Welcome Them

Creating a solitary bee habitat is simple:

  • Leave some bare soil in a sunny, sheltered spot (mining bees need this)
  • Bundle hollow stems — bamboo canes, dried umbellifers — into a south-facing stack
  • Let some plants go to seed — the tall, hollow stems are natural bee hotels
  • Plant native flowers that bloom from early spring through autumn

A proper insect hotel takes things further, with sections for different species, different nest materials, and protection from rain.
